Chapter Seven

When she left her apartment to go to work the next morning, she did so cautiously, carefully easing the front door open and looking both ways down the hallway before stepping out and locking the door behind her. She paused to make sure it was secure, and that there was no way anyone would be able to get in while she was gone short of breaking the door down or picking the lock, then hurried toward the elevator, her pepper spray clutched in her hand instead of at the bottom of her purse where it normally was.

Usually, she liked walking to work. The fresh air and exercise always raised her spirits, and the ability to walk or jog on her way to Papa Pacelli’s in the mornings made her feel better about the high percentage of pizza in her diet. Today, she considered getting a cab even though it was nice out. She usually only called a ride if it was raining, but the thought of whoever had tried to get into her apartment last night—and whoever had called to threaten her—had her on edge. The thought of getting into an unknown vehicle with a stranger wasn’t much better, though, so she struck out down the sidewalk like usual, keeping an extra eye on the other pedestrians who were sharing the walk with her.

Getting to the pizzeria was a relief. She unlocked the door quickly and locked it behind her as soon as she stepped inside. The dark and quiet of the empty restaurant was comforting, and she took a moment to wonder if she was being stupid. Should she have called the police last night? At the time, she hadn’t thought there was anything they would be able to do. Now, she was wishing she had. She didn’t want to live like this, always looking over her shoulder and terrified that someone was going to jump out of the shadows at her.

Maybe I really should just drop it, she thought, but deep down, she knew that if she ignored the urge to figure out how Greg had died and his killer managed to get away Scott-free, she would be consumed with guilt for the rest of her life. What if they killed again? Someone who was willing to kill a man with shoelaces was not the sort of person who should be walking free.

Taking a deep breath, she started toward the kitchen, doing what she always did when she was distracted while at work; she pushed all of her concerns to the back of her mind and focused on what she had to do that day. It was bound to be another busy afternoon with the convention still going full swing, but at least with the pizzeria full of customers, she wouldn’t have to look over her shoulder every second. There was safety in numbers, and if the last two days had been any indication, the pizzeria would not be lacking in numbers today.
